The northern Italian city of Bologna is one of these places that many tourists overlook when they plan their Italian trip. Such a mistake that is.
First settled in 1000 BC. Bologna is all about history. Seriously, as cliche, as it sounds, walking through the Bolognian winding alleys and extensive porticoes makes you feel like stepping into a different era.
Bologna photos can’t really give you the exact representation of the city. While the renaissance vibe and the smell of fresh basil floating around are hard to capture on camera, here are my best attempts.
Interesting facts about Bologna:
– The city is home to the oldest university in the world. Some of its most famous students include Dante, Petrarch, Thomas Becket, Pope Nicholas V, Erasmus of Rotterdam, Peter Martyr Vermigli, and Copernicus.
– With its 38 kilometers (24 miles) of porticoes (sidewalks with a roof) in the city’s historic center, Bologna is one of the world’s most pedestrian-friendly towns.
– There used to be more than 180 defending towers scattered around Bologna. Nowadays, they are less than 20, and they look like they are about to collapse any minute.
– San Petronio Basilica is the tenth-largest church in the world. It was started in 1388, and it’s still unfinished (and you thought your bathroom renovation is going slow).

– Bologna is the birthplace of the most famous pasta sauce in the world – Bolognese.
– Thanks to the city’s strategic location in the middle of Italy, The Bologna Centrale Railway Station is one of the most important transport hubs in the country, serving more than 58 million passengers annually.
– There are more women than men in Bologna (53.3% > 46.7%)
– There is a pub (Osteria del Sole) in Bologna that serves only drinks, and people are encouraged to bring their own food.
That’s all from me, I hope you enjoy the beauty of Bologna!
